The world of designer furniture and decor has its own "celebrities". They are recognized, they are looked up to, they are imitated, they are copied. We have collected the TOP 5 iconic design objects that you need to know "by sight".
Eames plastic chair
You understand design or not, you definitely are familiar with the Eames chair. This ergonomic hybrid of plastic and wood has been featured in almost every third interior project for 70 years.
The Imzas developed ergonomic furniture for the mass market, with two goals: to make design accessible and furniture comfortable. They used low-cost materials like plastic and plywood, turning them into ergonomic masterpieces, perfectly adapted to the parameters of the body.
The world first saw the legendary plastic chair in 1948 at the Low-Cost Furniture Design competition. "DSW" became famous as the first plastic chair in the world to be awarded mass production, and as one of the most comfortable furniture objects in history.
One-piece streamlined seat shell copies the contours of the human body, laconic maple legs make the model stable.
The Chair “Egg”
One of the most copied furniture objects in the world belongs to the genius of Danish designer Arne Jacobson.
About a hundred years ago, the Danish government decided to invest in design at the state level. Designers worked on affordable and ergonomic furniture, and for the purpose of personification gave their works memorable "nicknames".
Jacobson reinterpreted the design of the classic fireplace chair with a high back and "ears" in the Scandinavian style, showing the world a more concise form and addition in the quality of a footstool and a lever for controlling the tilt. To make the chair take an "egg-shaped" shape, advanced technologies of the mid-twentieth century were used — the frame was made of polyurethane foam and fiberglass.
A smooth curve "eggs" hides the strut linking the chair of metal "ears" contribute to the privacy setting and protect against drafts, all the elements flow into each other, forming a solid form — a real revolution in the world of design.
Floor Lamp “Arco”
In 1962, the Aquille brothers, together with Pierre Giacomo Castiglioni, set out to create a home version of a street lamp and design one of the most famous and copied lamps in the history of mankind.
This product of design thought has only one drawback: you will not be able to move such a floor lamp freely around the interior. It takes more than a pair of hands, instructions, and... a stick to move a heavyweight. Did you notice the round hole in the marble base?
Eames House Bird
Another iconic design object from the Eames couple.
The history of this decorative element is notable in that the Imzas were not its creators. The black bird figurine, Dating from about 1910, they brought back from a trip and for many years added in their own living room. The work of folk art was often featured in photos of Imzov, and in the 1950s appeared on a poster advertising designer chairs.
Everyone liked the bird. As a result, the original figure was subjected to three-dimensional scanning, on the basis of which the iconic element of decoration was created from wood and metal rods.
Sofa “Victoria and Albert”
The only item on our list whose birthday was in the 21st century. The "Victoria and Albert" sofa was designed by Ron Arad in 2000 and immediately became a hit.
Despite the true source of inspiration, the first Association that comes to mind when looking at the sofa is symbolic-it is the sign of infinity. A fiberglass frame and a stretch-covered polyurethane foam filling made it possible to achieve this shape. The frame and legs of the sofa are made of steel.
Innovative form, cutting-edge materials, accessibility and convenience are often essential ingredients for creating an iconic design object, but status is only awarded to it when it passes the test of time and generations.
