“Main shade of the year”, “fashionable palette of the season”- familiar phrases in fashion industry and interior design. We often perceive color trends as a proper, but if we think about it, there is a question: who are the judges? We will tell you who and how chooses fashionable interior shades.

Organizations such as the Scandinavian color Institute, the RAL Institute, influential style agencies and major paint brands are at the helm of color trends, but the main authority in the world of coloristics is certainly the Pantone color Institute. Pantone palettes are used for web design, fashion industry, and interior fashion. In essence, Pantone creates a common information field for designers. How does this happen?

The staff of the Pantone color Institute consists not only of a group of experts, but also of numerous freelancers who collect information in all areas of human life where color is involved: catwalks, interior design, social networks, in the film industry, and so on. Pantone experts, processing the information received, analyze world moods, trends and color preferences, and make a color forecast, determining seasonal shades-favorites and the main color of the year. Pantone are not legislators, but rather predictors of color trends.

How do they do that?

The color of the year in Pantone is determined over two years: first, color patterns and preferences are recorded, the reliability of which determines the demand for certain shades of production companies. Then, in collaboration with the world's leading designers, a shortlist of popular shades is created, one of which will become a universal favorite. The main shade of the year is traditionally announced in December.

Leading paint companies, putting forward their own fashion palettes, also focus on trends in the design world and the demand in their own showrooms. Because of this, the fashion palettes of different brands and organizations are often synonymous with each other.

What is behind the color

Experts not only monitor color moods in society, but also analyze their cause. So in 2019, Pantone's favorite shade was "Living coral", because, according to the color Institute, it was this shade that the world" needed " at that time. We put the word "needed" in quotation marks — of course, the world could live without "Living coral", but it definitely needed a dose of optimism, warmth and love of nature, which was symbolized by the chosen Pantone shade.

In 2020, Pantone declared the favorite "Classic blue". Experts explained this choice by the world's desire for stability and calm, which is symbolized by the serene hue of the twilight sky. Given the events of 2020, the forecast was justified.

Pantone's predicted hit shade 2020 was in tune with the fashion palettes of most paint brands: a noble dark blue color in different variations appeared in almost all.

At the same time, according to the paint brand Dulux, the main color of the year was "Quiet Dawn" — a calm light and versatile shade.

And the Tikkurila brand chose the life-affirming light yellow shade "Lemonade" as its favorite to let summer and sun into the interior.

So for Pantone and Dulux they became the sky: some twilight, others morning. In General, all fashionable shades of 2020 look back at nature, trying to "catch" its authentic colors and adapt them to interior fashion. The choice of the source of inspiration is also not accidental, but is dictated by the environmental situation and the world's desire for harmony and balance, which Pantone noted.

To perceive fashionable palette as the imposition of the tastes wrong. Coloristic trends are a help in choosing a harmonious color scheme for your interior and in fact ready-made solutions. And color is the most affordable way to make the interior fashionable, but a professional designer will never impose a shade that is not in tune with your tastes, whether it is at least three times the most trending.
