Motorcycle IZH Planet-3: what was the Soviet legend
The Soviet Union may not have made the best motorcycles in the world, but they definitely tried to keep up with the leading manufacturers. One of the most famous and popular motor vehicles can be safely considered the famous IZH Planet-3, which was released in 1969. Today we will talk about what exactly the legend of Soviet roads was and the dream of all domestic fans of two-wheeled vehicles.
The history of IZH "Planet" motorcycles began back in 1962. The series developed rapidly and already in 1969 a third-generation model was released - IZH Planet-3. One of the most successful motorcycles of the USSR will be produced until 1985, until it is completely replaced on the conveyor by the updated IZH Planet-4. There was a lot of interesting things in the troika at one time. For example, the motorcycle was qualitatively different from all its predecessors in the design of the gas tank, mud flaps and toolbox. It was also the first Soviet motorcycle to receive direction indicators.
However, the most important achievement of the "troika" in comparison with the "two" was of course a more powerful engine. So, the 15.5 strong unit was replaced by an 18-horsepower engine, which at that time was a significant step forward. The motorcycle carburetor remained the same. The same was true for the fuel used. IZH Planet-3 was refueled with the same A-72. Minor changes have been made to the radiator cooling system.
Interesting fact : IZHMASH received an impressive award for motorcycles IZH Planet-3 and Jupiter-3 in 1970. The competition was held by the USSR Ministry of Industry. Already in 1973 "Planet" will receive the highest quality category.
It is also important that when developing IZH Planeta-3, the designers of IZHMASH tried to make the motorcycle not only more reliable and comfortable, but also more modern in appearance. For this, in particular, a transition was made to more advanced tires with a dimension of 3.50-18. Thanks to them, the motorcycle began to look more massive. A new gas tank and wheel flaps added a touch of elegance to the vehicle.
Finally, the Troika has received several important changes (compared to its predecessors) in the shock absorbers and rear suspension, which is much softer and more responsive. Starting with this model, chrome springs were made on motorcycles.
